When I was thinking about becoming a VC, I knew that I would enjoy the activities and subject matter, and it seemed like the success scenario would be attractive to me. But I wasn’t a professional investor, and that’s primarily what being a successful VC is all about. EIR(入驻创业者)是做什么的?

What it means to be an EIR…

The position is typically a somewhat informal affiliation with a VC in which both the VC and EIR work together to review deals that are a “fit” with both the VC’s areas of focus and the EIR’s interest and expertise. The goal is to find a company that a) needs funding and b) could benefit from the leadership the EIR can provide, typically at the CEO level. In the interim, the VC benefits from the EIR’s expertise in a particular field and the EIR benefits from the larger volume of deal flow that the VC is seeing at any time. In some cases, an EIR can build a de novo business plan which the VC funds.

I get paid (well) for interesting people to come in and tell me how they want to change the world – Being an entrepreneur is like having blinders on.  At least for the best entrepreneurs.  Some people do the conference circuit too much, get involved in lots of side projects and attend every entrepreneur dinner.  For me that’s always a bad sign.  When I was running startups I felt like a horse with blinders on because I was super focused on the content management market and ignored many other markets.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about my age. I’m 43 years old and I have been in venture capital atRRE since I co-founded it in 1994 when I was still 27. At 27 I was always the youngest VC partner in the room. To say that the information technology business and the venture capital business have changed in this time period would be an understatement. Since I began, the industry has experienced the greatest bubble in its history and the greatest crash. The number of venture capitalists has tripled and then halved with perhaps more to come. These days I’m often the oldest person in the room. Two of my portfolio company CEO’s were pre-teens when I started at RRE.
